Investment Criteria

Companies that apply to present to Maverick Angels are typically seeking Series A or B round funding, have achieved some validation in the market and have raised some seed level funding.

Some of the investment criteria used to evaluate investment opportunities which come to Maverick Angels are:

  • Large market opportunity
  • Validation in the market
  • Barriers to entry by competitors
  • Intellectual property protection
  • Current revenues
  • A strong management team
  • A seasoned board members and advisors
  • A sustainable business model
  • The pattern of company growth
  • The plan for achieving profitability
  • The exit strategy for investors in the form of an IPO or company acquisition.

Investment Process

The selection process for prospective presenters is the following:

  1. On-Line Application
    Prospective presenters complete the on-line application using the link at the bottom of this page once you have finished reading this page in its entirety. There is no cost to submit an application.

  2. Pre-Screening Committee Review
    Submitted applications are reviewed by our Pre-Screening Committee. Maverick Angels will look at any company that has the potential to generate a multiple ROI. These industries include, but are not limited to: Technology, Software, Biotech/Healthcare, Consumer Products, Telecommunications, Media/Entertainment, Real Estate, Cleantech and Financial Services to name a few. Our committee selects which companies should proceed to present at the Maverick Angels Deal Line-Up Meeting. Typically, 7 to 9 companies are chosen to move forward each month.

  3. Maverick Angels Boot Camp for Entrepreneurs℠
    All companies qualified to present at the Deal Line-Up must satisfy our Boot Camp for Entrepreneurs℠ requirement. The Boot Camp for Entrepreneurs℠ is a day-long training focused on how to present to angel investors and serves as a venture acceleration and resource-sharing session with other attending start-ups. The Program provides an immersive experience where entrepreneurs receive real-time feedback on their investor pitches and business models.

    If you are not located close to Westlake Village, we have an online version you can watch as an alternative to attending the in-person Boot Camp. The online option is only available to those that are not located in Southern California. The fee for the Boot Camp is $495 for either the in-person Boot Camp or online version and is due in full before the selected company attends the Boot Camp. These fees are non-refundable.   4. Deal Line-Up Meeting
    The week following the Boot Camp for Entrepreneurs℠, each company presents at the Deal Line-Up either in-person or via teleconference. Once all of the companies have presented, the Deal Line-Up Committee votes to determine which top companies will present at the Maverick Angels Arena. Typically, 3 to 5 companies are selected to present at the Arena Meeting. There is no fee for participating in the Deal Line-Up

  5. Maverick Angels Arena Meeting
    Companies chosen at the Deal Line-Up are invited to present to the full Maverick Angels Membership. The presentations are again 20 minutes in length (10-minute core presentation followed by a 10-minute Q & A session.) There is a single non-refundable fee of $1500.00 to present at all three chapters of Maverick Angels to cover administrative costs. The three chapters are located in Westlake Village, Santa Barbara, and the South Bay (based in Palos Verdes). Please click here for the dates and times of the Arena Meetings.

    Maverick Angels Members who are interested in learning more about each company turn in an Investor Interest & Resource sheet with their contact information. Once all of the company presentations have been given, the presenters are excused from the room while the Maverick Angels Members discuss the presentations. The recorded feedback is subsequently given to the entrepreneur in order to provide them with beneficial guidance.

  6. Due Diligence
    After the Arena Meeting, the company enters into a due diligence phase with the Maverick Angels Members who expressed interest in the company. Where appropriate, the Members who expressed interest in a presenting company will conduct a Pre-Diligence Audit Meeting in order to identify the key issues involved in the investment offering which must be addressed before any investments are made. This meeting will be attended by the presenting entrepreneur, the interested Members and key advisors to the network who will assist the Members in the due diligence process. Typically, a lead investor will arise to help coordinate due diligence efforts and negotiations with the company. Members reconvene within 45 days of the presentation to review the due diligence status. Members then make separate investments following the due diligence period.
